Monsanto is consistently ranked among the most evil of all corporations on Earth, wreaking havoc on public health and the environment with its deadly chemicals, but under U.S. law, people and living things don't matter to a corporation, only profits for its shareholders. So, we've teamed up with a group of ethical shareholders led by Harrington Investments, a socially responsible investment advisory firm, that wants to change how Monsanto operates.

What if Monsanto had to pay for its corporate crimes? If it were to be held liable for costs associated with its products, shareholders would see their accounts dramatically reduced. We intend to inform them of this.

Please join us in St. Louis to support a shareholder resolution to study the financial risks associated with genetically engineered crops. While an OCA representative is speaking inside the shareholders meeting, another group of us will be outside, peacefully picketing.

Los invitamos a participar de la caravana Todos Unidos por una Soberanía Alimentaria, a celebrarse el 16 de octubre a las 8 am. El lugar de encuentro será frente a la Universidad Interamericana de Ponce y seguiremos en caravana hacia la Plaza Pública de Salinas. Allí, Carmelo Ruiz orientará a los presentes con la charla Soberanía Alimentaria vs Transgénicos: Esperanza, Resistencia y Acción.

Ante la realidad de que Puerto Rico importa aproximadamente el 90% de los alimentos que consume y como parte de la actividad nacional llamada Millions Againts Monsanto convocada por la Organic Consumers Association, la Organización Boricuá invita a este esfuerzo con el objetivo de forjar un discurso entre agricultores y consumidores sobre los alimentos genéticamente modificados o comúnmente conocidos como transgénicos. Igualmente, nos interesa fomentar en la ciudadanía el interés de salvaguardar los conocimientos criollo-agrícolas, proteger nuestras semillas nativas, sanas e inalteradas para el beneficio de la salud y legado a generaciones futuras.

Durante el “Foro Mundial de la Soberanía Alimentaria” celebrado en La Habana Cuba en el año 2001, se declaró el 16 de octubre de cada año como el día oficial de la Soberanía Alimentaria, sustituyendo así el Día Mundial de la Alimentación.

La Soberanía Alimentaria es una vía para erradicar el hambre y la malnutrición y así garantizar la seguridad alimentaria duradera y sustentable para todos los pueblos.

Se entiende como soberanía alimentaria el derecho de los pueblos a definir sus propias políticas y estrategias sustentables de producción, distribución y consumo de alimentos, garantizando de esta forma el derecho a la alimentación para toda la población, con base en la pequeña y mediana producción. De esta forma se respetan las culturas y la diversidad de los modos campesinos, pesqueros e indígenas de producción agropecuaria, comercialización y gestión de los espacios rurales, en los cuales la mujer desempeña un papel fundamental. La soberanía alimentaria favorece la independencia económica, política y cultural de los pueblos.

Favor de invitar a los agricultores y consumidores de su área. De tener cualquier pregunta, no dudes en comunicarte con nosotros. Estamos deseosos de comenzar a desarrollar proyectos con ustedes y servir de difusores de las gestiones y logros de todos los agricultores de Puerto Rico.

Need inspiration for World Food Day? Check out the action organized by a delegation of the Midwest Rising Convergence at the Monsanto headquarters in St. Louis.

The protestors coordinated a food dump to demonstrate the harmful effects Monsanto's products have on the health and well being of farmers, indigenous peoples in the US and abroad, and on agriculture in general, especially in more impoverished countries. Activists demanded that the corporation label its genetically modified food and stop disrupting indigenous ways of agriculture.

Monsanto released the following statement in response to the protest:

"We respect each individual's right to express his or her point of view. We understand that topics such as agriculture and its uses - food, feed, clothing and bioenergy - are important to all of us. Our world faces a number of challenges including items directly related to agriculture, such as how do we feed a growing population. We understand that no single company or form of agriculture can address these challenges individually. We embrace all forms of agriculture and the choices of farmers to grow what makes sense to them and the needs of their customers."

Seattle, Boulder, New York & Your Town!

To gear up for the Millions Against Monsanto actions on World Food Day, October 16, 2011, we're hosting regional anti-GMO summits at each of the Green Festivals around the country. This weekend, we'll be in Seattle. Here are the details:

The Green Festival is Saturday and Sunday May 21-22 @ Qwest Event Center, 800 Occidental Ave., Seattle, WA.

Admission is $10-$25

We'll have a limited number of free passes to distribute to volunteers. If you've already volunteered, we'll leave your name on a list at the exhibitor check-in desk. If you'd like to volunteer and need a pass, please contact us here.

The Green Festival goes from 10-7 Saturday and 11-6 on Sunday. We'd love to have your help for a couple hours in the Millions Against Monsanto booth (# 1014)!

At 3:30 pm Alexis Baden-Meyer (Organic Consumers Association) & Bill Aal (AGRA-Watch) will present in the Community Action Pavilion. Their presentation will be called Taking on the Giants: Millions Against Monsanto and Watching the Gates Foundation. Learn more here.

Durante o 23º Congresso de Entomologia (ciência que estuda os insetos), realizado no final de setembro em Natal (RN), estudantes e atores realizaram um protesto bem humorado contra as transnacionais Monsanto e Bayer.

Dentro do estande da Monsanto os ativistas encenaram o extermínio da biodiversidade gerado pelas transnacionais, "desmascarando a estratégia de financiamento de pesquisa para lucros próprios"

O protesto, filmado e postado no youtube, termina com a seguinte mensagem de denuncia: "A Monsanto vive as custas do meio ambiente. Seus Agrotóxicos contaminam a Terra. Suas sementes transgênicas destroem a biodiversidade e aprisionam agricultores. No Brasil, a Monsanto atua em paceria com a Embrapa. A Bayer produz um dos pesticidas mais venenosos do mundo. Kisan Swaraj Yatra asserts need for Seed Sovereignty

Jalna (Maharashtra)/New Delhi: On the eve of the World Food Day and on the thirteenth day of its pan-Indian outreach tour on "Food, Farmers & Freedom", Kisan Swaraj Yatra reached Jalna in Maharashtra today and members asserted the need for seed sovereignty as an integral part of food security and sovereignty in the country. Here, hundreds of farmers and activists made a bonfire of GM seeds and protested against corporations like Mahyco, one of Monsanto's arms in India.

"The Kisan Swaraj Yatra protests against the erosion of seed sovereignty and diversity by rapidly-expanding corporatisation of the seed sector in India, coupled with lax regulation, pro-corporate legislations that violate farmers' a priori rights and aggressive corporate strategies promoting seed monopolies. On the other hand, public sector agencies have abdicated their role completely with regard to appropriate, affordable, diverse seed for farmers even as farmers themselves are constantly encouraged to give up their well-adapted native seeds and go in for greater seed replacement.

Cotton seed is a classic example for this - today, farmers don't have any choices with regard to cotton other than Bt cotton brands being made available inIndia- an overwhelming majority of these are controlled by Monsanto. Monsanto is known for its monopolistic behaviour, as reiterated by the MRTP Commission in India in 2006, and is also being investigated in the USA for similar behaviour. Further, the constant aggressive promotion of private sector hybrids and lack of accountable work by public sector agencies means that there is near-total dependency on the companies. On another front, the regulatory frameworks are not equipped to hold any of these private sector agencies or public sector agencies accountable and liable, to uphold the interests of farmers. In the recent Seeds Bill-related discussions, the Union Agriculture Minister appeared to succumb to the threat of seed corporations who have threatened that they will not supply cotton seed anymore! The sub-licensing agreements of MNCs with their Indian partners are also encouraging such monopolies and there have been no official investigations or objections into something like this. All of this clearly jeopardizes India's and Indian farmers' food and seed sovereignty", said a press release from the Kisan Swaraj Yatra.

"We have come to Jalna as part of the Kisan Swaraj Yatra with a specific purpose. We want to put out a message to fellow Indian farmers to acknowledge, appreciate and understand our own breeding abilities and improve on it, to avoid getting trapped in the web of monopolistic corporations - several experiences on the ground exemplify this and there are emerging farmer-breeder networks in the country which have farmers who have evolved very popular varieties sown by thousands of farmers. We want to put out a message to the governments that their pro-corporate, anti-farmer policies and legislations will be opposed by people and it is their responsibility to put the interests of Indian citizens, most importantly farmers, in the forefront. We want to put out a message to corporations like Monsanto - they need to quit Indian farming since it is obvious that their profiteering agendas are against farmers. We oppose their holding patents on seeds which are basic resources of farmers and we believe that their products are ultimately harmful for our fields and health. The anti-farmer nature of these companies is obvious from the cases they have filed against AP and Gujarat governments to stop them from regulating the price and royalties on seeds. Therefore, hundreds of us are here today. This bonfire of GM seeds is a symbolic gesture with this message to various constituencies", explained Datta Kadam (Motigaon village) and Vimal tai Gofane (Tembuni village), farmers who led the protest. Farmers, speaking on the occasion, expressed their concern with regard to seed quality, pricing, accountability and so on and said that the solution forward seems to be to move towards more agro-diversity in our farms, self-reliance and locally suitable seeds, especially in the context of climate change.

The Kisan Swaraj Yatra, which set off on Gandhi Jayanti at Sabarmati Ashram commenced its journey in Maharashtra on October 13th, after covering Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, on its way to Rajghat, covering 20 states ofIndia. Members of ASHA (Alliancefor Sustainable & Holistic Agriculture) urged citizens to visit www.kisanswaraj.in and sign on the petition to save farmers, their rights and resources and in turn, save all consumers of food.
