GM wheat that has not been approved for sale or commercial production in the U.S has been found growing in a field in Washington state. No GM wheat has ever been commercialised, but GM wheat was authorised for field trials in the U.S. between 2000-2003. The GM wheat had previously been discovered growing in Oregon in 2013, and in Montana in 2014.

Second Discovery of Unapproved GM Wheat in the U.S.

Unapproved genetically modified (GM) wheat developed by Monsanto has recently been found growing at a research facility of Montana State University, which ended field trials on it over a decade ago. This is the second such finding of GM wheat, following the discovery of another unapproved Monsanto GM wheat variety in an Oregon farm last year. Both varieties are resistant to Monsanto’s herbicide, Roundup. (See Items 1 and 2). 
GM wheat has not been approved for commercial release anywhere in the world. The Oregon discovery resulted in countries like South Korea and Japan temporarily stopping imports of U.S. wheat and there are concerns that the Montana incident will trigger the same reaction. Several Oregon farmers sued Monsanto for failing to protect the market from contamination and the parties have agreed to a settlement. “Genetic contamination is a serious threat to farmers across the country,” says Andrew Kimbrell, Executive Director for the Center for Food Safety.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has released its final report on the Oregon case. While admitting that it did not know how the contamination occurred, it has dismissed it as an “isolated incident” and declared that the GM wheat was not found in commercial supplies. It is currently investigating the Montana event. (See Item 3).

The concerned farmer who sent them had contacted her because a patch of wheat had refused to die after being treated with a powerful herbicide called Roundup. “The farmer asked me if the wheat could have evolved a natural resistance to the herbicide,” says Mallory-Smith, “but I said that that wasn’t possible because of the way wheat is exposed to Roundup.” Then the grower mentioned the possibility that Monsanto’s genetically modified wheat seeds might have made their way into the field somehow.

Monsanto gets sued, again

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Another Kansas farmer has filed suit against seed giant Monsanto over the discovery of an isolated field of genetically engineered wheat in Oregon.

Harvey County wheat grower Bill Budde sued Monsanto on Friday in a lawsuit seeking class-action status. It's at least the third such lawsuit filed in federal court in Kansas against St. Louis-based Monsanto since the discovery of the field in May.

Similar lawsuits have also been filed in Idaho and Washington state.

Monsanto has said none of the genetically modified wheat entered the commercial market. The company contends no legal liability exists given the care undertaken, and it has vowed to present a vigorous defense to the lawsuits.

Bellingham, WA, May 29, 2013—The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced today that an unapproved variety of genetically engineered glyphosate-resistant wheat was found in samples taken from a farm in Oregon. The variety detected was the same variety that Monsanto grew in test plots in 16 states from 1998 to 2005. There are no genetically engineered wheat varieties currently approved for sale in the United States or any other country.
Michael Firko, Acting Deputy Administrator for APHIS’ Biotechnology Regulatory Services states in the USDA’spress release: “We are taking this situation very seriously and have launched a formal investigation. Our first priority is to as quickly as possible determine the circumstances and extent of the situation and how it happened. We are collaborating with state, industry, and trading partners on this situation and are committed to providing timely information about our findings. USDA will put all necessary resources towards this investigation.”
The Non-GMO Project responded immediately by coordinating a surveillance testing strategy to help assess the extent of the contamination. The testing plan includes sampling wheat products from the national retail market as well as raw plant material directly from Oregon. The first tests are scheduled for Thursday, May 30, less than 24 hours after the USDA’s announcement. According to Megan Westgate, Executive Director of the Non-GMO Project, “Our priority right now is to assure the integrity of Non-GMO Project Verified products and to assist in the USDA’s investigation. The current situation is yet another reminder of the serious risks posed by open-air field trials of unapproved GMO crops.”
This is not the first time a U.S. crop has been contaminated by an unapproved GMO. Most notably, in August 2006 the USDA announced that Bayer’s genetically engineered LibertyLink rice was found in two popular varieties of U.S. long-grain rice. The discovery led to rejection by foreign markets and a corresponding dramatic decline in U.S. rice prices. The LibertyLink contamination eventually resulted in a $750 million legal settlement between Germany-based Bayer AG and its affiliates and U.S. rice farmers. According to the Delta Farm Press, European Union purchases of U.S. rice remain only a small fraction of what they were before the 2006 contamination incident.
The U.S. wheat market has similar vulnerability. According to the Oregon Wheat Commission, Oregon exports 90% of its wheat production. More than 60 countries now require labeling of GMOs, and international regulations on import and sale of unapproved GMO varieties are strict.
With the Non-GMO Project Verified label currently the fastest-growing claim in the natural products industry and more than 30 states now working toward mandatory GMO labeling, widespread GMO contamination in wheat would also have serious repercussions for the domestic market. Westgate adds, “We remain hopeful that this is an isolated incident, but the Non-GMO Project will do whatever it takes to protect the consumer’s right to know.”

FINLAND, Minn. - The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) today called on the U.S.  Department of Agriculture (USDA) to immediately end all open-air field testing of genetically engineered crops (GMOs). The request comes in response to last week’s discovery by an Oregon farmer of an unapproved, illegal variety of wheat, genetically engineered by Monsanto to withstand the company's toxic RoundUp herbicide, growing on his property.

The OCA has launched a consumer petition calling on the USDA to halt open-air field trials of GMO crops.

“Public health and the livelihood of U.S. wheat farmers have been endangered as a result of America’s regulatory recklessness,” said Ronnie Cummins,  National Director of the OCA. “Monsanto is currently conducting hundreds of field trials of GMO crops in the U.S. How many other unknown instances of contamination have occurred but have yet to be discovered? The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack should impose an immediate moratorium on open-air field trials of all new GMO crops that have yet to be approved for human consumption.”

The rogue GMO wheat was discovered a full eight years after Monsanto’s last known field trials in the state. The discovery is proof that GMO crops, legal or otherwise, have the potential to contaminate conventional non-GMO and organic crops. No varieties of GM wheat have been approved for human consumption by any country in the world, largely due to widespread and sustained farmer and consumer protests.

Related health problems associated with GMO wheat sprayed with Monsanto’s RoundUp herbicide include liver failure, gastrointestinal issues, obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, among others. Now U.S. consumers cannot be assured that their wheat products are GMO-free, much less free of unapproved GMOs. And U.S. farmers are faced with huge losses, as other countries refuse U.S. shipments of potentially contaminated wheat.

According to the USDA’s biotechnology database, there are hundreds of open-air field trials of GMO crops going on across the country.  The variety of illegal wheat discovered in Oregon was field-tested in 16 states, including Oregon, from 1998 through 2005. According to a Bloomberg report, Monsanto is still doing field tests of GMO wheat today, in North Dakota and Hawaii, though the company has tried to portray its wheat program as having been closed out nine years ago. There are also hundreds of other GMO field trials currently being conducted in every region of the country.

“No further trials should be allowed until biotech companies can guarantee, 100 percent, that their unapproved crops will not contaminate non-GMO and organic crops,” said Cummins.  “Secretary Vilsack should immediately recall the rest of Monsanto's GMO wheat: 150 acres in Hawaii and 300 acres in North Dakota. Then he should turn his attention to the hundreds of other GMO field trials, any one of which could create the next contamination crisis.”

In the wake of the announcement by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on 29 May 2013 that unapproved genetically engineered (GE) glyphosate-resistant wheat plants (developed by Monsanto) were found in a farm in Oregon, there has been a growing demand for answers on how this could have happened and strong critique on the (in)adequacy of control over field trials of GE crops.  

There have been 22 documented cases of unauthorized releases of GE varieties e.g. of corn and rice over the past two decades, according to a study by the University of California, Riverside, USA. What makes this most recent incident especially alarming is that unlike GE corn and soy, GE wheat hasn’t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. 

In this particular case, Monsanto was authorized to field test its GE wheat in 16 states from 1998 to 2005. The company claims that it followed rigorous procedures in closing the project such as forcing researchers to burn or ship back leftover seeds. Obviously, this wasn’t enough. 

Field trials are environmental releases of engineered transgenes and should be regulated stringently as such. But are they? The USDA recorded 712 violations of its regulations from 2003-2007, including 98 that could lead to a possible release of unauthorized crops, and 21 major non-compliances from 1995-2011, five of which involved Monsanto.  

A report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) in 2008 concluded that the USDA lacked the resources to conduct routine testing on areas adjacent to the GE crops to monitor any escape of the transgenes and instead relied on biotechnology companies to voluntarily provide test results.

The U.S. has some 1,000 field trials for new GE crops every year, most in multiple sites. The protocols for containing those genes are lax, argue critics. “I would not be at all surprised if there are a number of experimental genes that have contaminated and are happily being passed along at low levels in the food supplies of various crops already, but nobody’s testing,” says Doug Gurian-Sherman, a senior scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington. “It’s really a ‘don’t look, don’t tell’ situation. We just really don’t know”.

Scientific debate, not ad hominem attacks




ENSSER calls for scientific debate of potential health risks of GM wheat instead of ad hominem attacks on researchers
19 Sep 2012 - On 11 September 2012, the Science Media Centre (SMC) published response comments (by Prof. Rick Roush, Assoc. Prof. Peter Dearden, Prof. Peter Langridge and Dr. Ian Edwards) in reply to expert scientific opinions about the safety of GM wheat varieties that have been developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) of Australia. The expert opinions were written by three risk assessment researchers, molecular biologist Prof. Jack Heinemann of Canterbury University (New Zealand), biochemist and epidemiologist Assoc. Prof. Judy Carman of Flinders University (Australia), and molecular geneticist Dr. Michael Antoniou of Kings College London (UK). The expert opinions were written in the form of reports and were prepared at the request of the Safe Food Institute of Australia, and communicated by the associated Safe Food Foundation.
After reviewing the response comments, ENSSER is disappointed by the Science Media Centre's decision to post personal attacks by the commentators on the authors of the original reports, rather than engage in a scientific debate that might have been useful to journalists, its stated audience.
ENSSER encourages the three commentators posting to the SMC website to take future opportunities to address the science rather than use these platforms to engage in ad hominem argumentation. The CSIRO, the Australian regulator (the OGTR), and each of these commentators could, and still can, put forth their own risk assessments to the public at any time. This is what we would have expected if the SMC were intending to provide clarity to the media.
In their post to the SMC, the commentators challenge the reports produced by Carman and Heinemann based on normative judgements, unsubstantiated assumptions, an apparently poor understanding risk assessment processes, and undignified name-calling.
Roush and Langridge begin their comments with an attempt to discredit the scientists by calling them "anti-GM campaigners" and "ideologically opposed to GM crops". Roush accuses the scientists of "deliberately bypass[ing] independent scientific assessment" and of practising "anti-GM so-called 'science'", while Edwards accuses them of "grossly premature alarmism". Langridge claims that the authors of the expert opinions "studiously ignore[d] the majority of the scientific literature and data". He further accuses them of deliberately avoiding "the normal process of peer review" and seeking "the appearance of credibility" for "scientifically flawed articles" by putting out a statement by someone with "no real knowledge" of the relevant science and pretending it is "proper science". In other words, Langridge is accusing the authors of perpetrating a kind of scientific fraud. None of these claims can be substantiated, and the commentators do nothing to substantiate them.
Roush and Dearden call Heinemann's report 'speculative'. All risk assessments are speculative because they are performed before the release of the product, whether for a field trial, for animal or human testing, or for a full release. The process requires considering exposure pathways that would exist, adverse effects that could arise, and hypotheses about how to detect any adverse effect if it were to occur and finally to determine if the effect was caused by the genetic modification and how this would be detected. Only after such experimentation is completed would the assessment not be speculative, but then there would be no point to risk assessment!
And we note that when CSIRO in its response says, "High amylose wheat has increased levels of resistant starch, which could have positive benefits for bowel health and people with diabetes" [emphasis added], this is also 'speculative'.
Roush claims erroneously that the authors "bypassed independent scientific assessment." when they did not. Like many government and other reports, they had their findings critically reviewed by fellow scientists (in addition to Dr. Antoniou). They did not send their report to a journal in this instance or seek blind review. However, neither has Roush for his claims (made to ABC radio that the "likelihood that this would happen in humans is very very small"). This conclusion is the outcome of a risk assessment and therefore, by Roush's standard, should have been subjected to "independent scientific assessment". At this time, we are not aware of any blind peer-reviewed journal articles that demonstrate the absence of the potential adverse effects outlined by Drs. Heinemann and Carman, who have publicly requested the evidence. Nor have we seen any blind peer-review of the Australian regulator's risk assessment.
Langridge accuses the report authors of ignoring "the majority of the scientific literature and data" on the safety of GM crops. Is Langridge aware that proper risk assessment is performed on a case-by-case basis? The safety of this particular form of GM wheat cannot be extrapolated from risk assessments of other kinds of plants, other kinds of modifications and modifications for other intended purposes, nor could the OGTR accept such an extrapolation.
Meanwhile, industry representative Edwards quizzically imposes an expiration date on risk assessments. If a risk was not raised at one time, he seems to believe that it cannot be raised later, even if it is a valid risk. We are not aware of any competent authority that would exclude new information at any time. Contrary to Edwards' highly personal views, CSIRO says 'the claims [by Heinemann, Carman and Antoniou] will be considered by CSIRO and the regulatory bodies in the context of all other relevant research in this area.' This is what the report authors were seeking and ENSSER welcomes that response by CSIRO.
ENSSER believes that the public, and science, are done a disservice when debate is reduced to ad hominem attack. Further, we believe that both science and the public can be harmed if research is impeded by the 'chilling effect' of such attacks. The public is entitled to a full and informed debate; scientific disagreement should result in further research, not dismissal through personal attack. Drs. Antoniou, Carman and Heinemann have engaged in proper scientific debate. Their expert opinions are based on evidence; their methodology, assumptions, reasoning and data have been provided for all to evaluate. SMC and other such outlets as well as fellow scientists should ensure that responses to their work do the same.

ANNEX: Setting the record straight
The Safe Food Institute had requested from Drs. Carman and Heinemann reports evaluating the risk assessment of GM wheat being developed in Australia by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The wheat is genetically modified using new dsRNA-mediated silencing; the OGTR has given CSIRO approval for field testing and a human feeding study. The Safe Food Institute then asked Dr. Antoniou, among others, to serve as an expert external reviewer of the reports. Dr. Antoniou provided his own conclusions and summary.
Carman and Heinemann are experts in their respective scientific fields and in biotechnology risk assessment. Assoc. Prof. Carman has expertise in animal and human biochemistry, nutrition and infectious diseases. Her work in epidemiology and risk assessment requires her understand how food consumption can affect the health of animals and humans. Prof. Heinemann has expertise in genetics and molecular biology, with an emphasis in infectious genetic elements and horizontal gene transfer. Both scientists have been actively involved in GMO risk assessment for over a decade. In their reports they give their recommendations for a robust sequence of experiments to address plausible potential hazards of the novel food. Proper risk assessment involves identifying potential hazards followed by constructing, where possible, specific and testable hypotheses for how these hazards might arise and how they would be detected.
Prof. Heinemann first constructed an exposure analysis. He asked: How could humans or animals come into contact with the dsRNAs uniquely produced in the GM wheat? The obvious way is through ingestion or inhalation of flour. Then he provided an extensive analysis of peer-reviewed scientific research that demonstrates unequivocally that dsRNA is sufficiently stable to be able to pass through food to humans and animals; it resists digestion, low pH and cooking temperatures.
Having established a scientifically plausible exposure pathway, he then hypothesised how the dsRNA produced by the wheat could cause an adverse effect. The most obvious means would be by doing in the human or animal what it is intended to do in the wheat, and cause gene silencing. He then provided an extensive analysis of peer-reviewed literature that demonstrates unequivocally that ingested dsRNAs either directly, or through amplification of secondary dsRNAs, silence genes in ingesting animals and human tissue culture cells.
A prediction of Prof. Heinemann's hypothesis is that the dsRNA would have to have sequence similarity to human genes in order to cause gene silencing. RNA is composed of nucleotides of mainly four types: A, G, U, C (and sometimes I). These nucleotides can form base-pairs when align and bond with their complementary nucleotides, in the same way as double-stranded DNA. When RNA does this, it is called double-stranded (ds) RNA. He sourced a sequence of the gene targeted for silencing in the wheat, called the SEI gene from Aegilops tauschii (a donor of one of the genomes in the multi genome wheat), as the sequence was deposited by the CSIRO on a public database. He found matches between short stretches of the wheat SEI gene and a similar human gene called GBE, and short matches to many other human genes.
For silencing, overall similarity between genes is not important. What is important is the concentration of similarity over a very short stretch of bases pairs in a sequence. The most potent dsRNA for causing silencing is about 21 nucleotides long and is a perfect match to a target, but as few as 7 contiguous base matches can be enough to cause silencing. Prof. Heinemann found too many potential targets to list them individually. So he published the list as Appendix 2 to his report.
Prof. Heinemann thus drew the conclusions that:
1. Exposure to the genetically engineered dsRNA molecules was likely;
2. Uptake was probable; and
3. Unintended silencing of human and animal genes was possible.
In light of his findings, Prof. Heinemann produced a list of 5 essential studies for risk assessment. At no time did he say that the CSIRO product would cause diseases or adverse effects. He did, however, ask for assurance from the Australian regulator and the CSIRO that this risk scenario had been excluded through proper scientific experimentation.
Dr. Carman considered that the most likely gene to be silenced in animals and people would be a similar gene to the one designed to be silenced in the GM wheat varieties. She therefore concentrated her risk assessment on the effects of silencing that gene. She determined that the GM wheat varieties were designed to silence a branching enzyme in the wheat plant that changed the type of carbohydrate that was stored in the plant. She used widely-available sources to determine that a silencing of the equivalent gene in animals and people could cause serious ill-health by changing the way carbohydrate is stored in the body, from a highly branched, soluble form of glycogen to an insoluble form of glycogen with far fewer branches. She further found that some people already suffer from this condition and provided information that severely affected children usually die from the condition.
She then reviewed the animal and human testing suggested by the CSIRO. She found evidence that testing was being conducted to determine if the wheat varieties produced the hoped-for beneficial effects on health but did not find any evidence that any potential adverse effects were being assessed. In fact, she found that the regulator (the OGTR) had determined that "the potential for increased weediness, allergenicity or toxicity ... is not an identified risk and will not be assessed further".
At no time did she say that the CSIRO product would cause a disease or adverse effects. She did, however, provide a list of additional safety assessments on animals and humans that she recommended be done in order to properly investigate possible adverse effects, and she recommended that these be done before the GM wheat varieties entered the animal feed and human food supplies.
Despite their protestations, neither Roush, Langridge, Edwards nor Dearden have offered evidence that these wheat varieties are safe to eat. However, Roush, Langridge and Edwards liberally resort to ad hominem attack and speculation on the report authors' motives; speculation for which they have only themselves as sources. None of them provides references to peer-reviewed literature that proves the GM wheat was safety tested on animals before its intended use in a human feeding trial. Such an evidence-based safety assessment is central to a scientific assessment of potential risks.
None of the commentary presented by SMC addresses these issues. None of these commentators provided evidence to prove, or even suggest, that the dsRNA molecules do not transmit to humans or other animals, or that the dsRNA molecules in this GM wheat won't, given the findings that similar plant derived molecules do just that. None of them provided references to peer-reviewed literature that proves the GM wheat was safety tested on animals before its intended use in a human feeding trial. Instead, Roush, Langridge and Edwards liberally resort to ad hominem attack and speculation on the report authors' motives; speculation for which they have only themselves as sources.

SCIENTISTS WARN ON CSIRO GM WHEAT THREAT

Expert scientists warn that genetically modified wheat may cause Glycogen Storage Disease IV, resulting in an enlarged liver, cirrhosis of the liver, and failure to thrive. Children born with this disease usually die at about the age of 5.
 
Australia is on track to be the first country in the world to grow GM wheat commercially, and to test this in human feeding trials.
 
Today in Melbourne molecular biologist and risk assessment researcher Professor Jack Heinemann of the University of Canterbury, NZ, and Associate Professor Judy Carman, a biochemist at Flinders University, will release expert scientific opinions on the safety of CSIRO's GM wheat. These opinions have been reviewed by Dr Michael Antoniou, reader in molecular genetics at King's College, London.
 
Professor Heinemann's expert opinion outlining how CSIRO's GM wheat silencing technology could transfer to humans is believed to be a world-first, and has been reviewed by scientists in Australia, the UK and Austria.
 
Australia is on track to be the first country in the world to allow the commercial growing of GM wheat. It is not yet grown anywhere else, nor is there any market worldwide that wants GM wheat. Current GM food crops, like canola and corn, are experiencing fierce resistance across the globe, and there is growing anger in the USA, the birthplace of GM food technology.
 
Australia has been selected to lead the push for the acceptance of GM wheat and CSIRO is currently conducting field trials of GM wheat in WA, NSW, and the ACT. CSIRO says human feeding trials are planned. It is feared these may already be underway.
 
Professor Heinemann has studied the similarity in the DNA sequencing of the wheat branching enzyme which makes starch in wheat, and the human branching enzyme which produces glycogen.
 
CSIRO's GM technology deliberately suppresses the wheat branching enzyme in GM wheat so there is less starch and the wheat has a lower glycaemic index.
 
Professor Heinemann says there is strong evidence that siRNA, a type of dsRNA - which is a form of ribonucleic acid, like DNA - when produced in wheat will transfer to humans through food.
 
"There is strong evidence that siRNAs produced in the wheat will remain in a form that can transmit to humans even when the wheat has been cooked or processed for use in food.
 
"There is strong evidence that once transmitted, siRNA produced in wheat would have the biological capacity to cause an effect."
 
There is also an environmental risk, which the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) appears to have overlooked in allowing field trials. These siRNAs will also transfer to animals that eat the wheat throughout the production chain, including beneficial insects, birds, mammals etc
 
Biochemist Dr Judy Carman from Flinders University has reviewed the Heinemann paper and written her own expert scientific opinion outlining the possible disease consequences from the transfer of siRNAs. She says it is likely that if a person eats GM wheat then the siRNA engineered to suppress the wheat branching enzyme would also silence the human branching enzyme.
 
Both expert scientists are concerned that human consumption of this GM wheat technology - which is not affected by cooking or other processing - could suppress the production of glycogen, which is critical for life.
 
In her expert opinion, Associate Professor Carman goes on to say: "Consequently it is clear that there is an obvious risk to animals and humans who eat these GM wheat varieties." She says this could lead to disease and death. In fact, humans born with a genetic form of this disease usually die by the age of 5.
 
Dr Michael Antoniou, Reader in Molecular Genetics at King‚s College, London, has also reviewed and endorsed the Heinemann and Carman expert opinions.
 
He says it not a question of if there will be gene function disturbances, but to what degree and with currently unknown health consequences. He's criticised CSIRO, and the regulators, OGTR and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), for not being up to date with the latest developments in the field of RNAi technology and therefore not taking the necessary steps to properly evaluate the safety of the GM wheat.
 
The research was commissioned for the Safe Food Foundation, an Australian not for profit organisation that campaigns and advocates on food issues.
 
Safe Food Foundation director Scott Kinnear says the urgent scientific opinions were commissioned after a researcher alerted them to the similarity in the DNA sequencing of the wheat branching enzyme and human branching enzyme.
 
"Apart from the serious public health risk, the cost to taxpayers and farmers could be significant. It reminds me of CSIRO's GM field pea project, shelved in 2005, which had allergen like reactions when tested on mice - and a loss to taxpayers of approximately $10 million.
 
"In this case the testing was done at ANU as we believe that CSIRO lacks the capacity to do proper safety studies. In fact the Australian regulators - FSANZ and the OGTR - do not conduct any safety testing, nor require the safety testing recommended by our safety experts.
 
"FSANZ and the OGTR rely on GM applicants to do their own safety testing, even though CSIRO has previously demonstrated that it does not have the capacity to do this."
 
The Safe Food Foundation calls on CSIRO to immediately release all details of its safety testing on GM wheat for urgent independent scientific review, and immediately release the precise DNA sequences involved so that independent scientists can conduct further urgent checking.
 
"If CSIRO cannot provide immediate and adequate responses to these issues we call on them to immediately cease all field trials currently underway, stop all plans for human feeding trials, and agree to undertake the recommended safety testing," Mr Kinnear said.

Recent research has found that varieties of GM wheat are outcrossing to other plants at a rate six times higher than conventional varieties. [1]
These findings, along with other data showing wheat can outcross from commercial fields to crops over 2.75 kilometres away, are reviewed in a new briefing published today by GM Freeze. [2]
Although wheat is largely self-pollinating the new data show the difficulties of preventing contamination if GM wheat is ever grown commercially.
Further difficulties in keeping GM and non-GM wheat seed and grain separate throughout the food web are also highlighted. Comingling of the two crops even at low level due to carelessness, poor standards or human error would cause considerable problems for any farmer or producer committed to producing non-GM bakery products or animal feed.
The costs of cleaning up any GM contamination in wheat would fall on farmers, seed merchants, millers, feed merchants, bakers and retailers because the GM industry refused to accept liability for it's products.
This has been seen in earlier examples of contamination incidents of long-grain rice in the US and flax in Canada. [3]
Commenting Pete Riley Campaign Director said:
"If GM wheat is ever grown on a commercial scale contamination will be inevitable either through outcrossing or mixing of seeds and grains. Even pro-GM sources now admit this, but they say it doesn't matter.
"Experience from the US and Canada shows that even small experimental plots can cause widespread contamination and disruption of the food chain, with considerable costs to food companies and farmers, including widespread loss of export markets.
"Biotech companies have so far been very reluctant to compensate farmers and companies in the food chain without court action compelling them to pay up.
The clean up costs of any GM contamination in wheat products like flour or bread will fall on anyone but the biotech companies.
"The presence of GM wheat in fields will immediately impose additional costs to trace and monitor all wheat crops from field to plate to ensure that no contamination has taken place.
"EU consumers have made it clear that they don't want GM food, and the simple way to ensure markets are protected is to stay well away from GM wheat in the first place. This is why bakers and food businesses like the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union and Chef Raymond Blanc support our call to halt the GM wheat trial in Hertfordshire,"

Greenpeace: Australia must say NO to GM wheat

Oxfam reported in 2011 that a handful of manufacturers, producers and retailers already control 70 per cent of decisions made in the global food system.[1] The world's top four seed companies - Monsanto, Dupont, Syngenta and Bayer - now control over half of the world's seed sales. These are also the GM companies pushing for control of Australian wheat.

Syngenta + CIMMYT = GM Wheat

The European biotechnology firm Syngenta and the International Center of Research for the Improvement of Corn and Wheat (CIMMYT) announced on April 6 that they will join forces to develop varieties of wheat, both conventional and GM. Syngenta, formed in 2000 with the merger of the agricultural divisions of Novartis and AstraZeneca, is the second largest pesticide company in the world and ranks third in the global seed market (topped only by the American firms Monsanto and Dupont).

CIMMYT, located in Mexico and founded by the Mexican government and the Rockefeller Foundation in 1943, a public sector international agricultural research center that played a very important role in the so-called “green revolution”, the name given to the export of the American model of industrial monoculture to poor developing countries promoted by, among others, the World Bank, the Rockefeller Foundation, the government of the US, and the UN.

“Wheat is a key crop for Syngenta; this partnership will strengthen the company’s global presence and reinforce its position as a leader in the worldwide commercial wheat seeds market”, declares Syngenta in a media release. “This market is expected to increase in value as new technologies are introduced. For CIMMYT, the partnership will strengthen its ability to use world wheat genetic resources and cutting-edge technologies to develop robust wheat varieties for disadvantaged farmers in developing countries and public research systems worldwide”.

Syngenta was the object of harsh international criticism after guards from a private firm that it contracted shot into a camp of the Landless Movement of Brazil, wounding several occupants and killing one. The camp, located in the Brazilian state of Paraná, was on a farm where Syngenta had been illegally growing GM corn.

CIMMYT, for its part, has been questioned by sectors of civil society for its apparent indifference to the contamination of traditional Mexican corn with GM varieties. CIMMYT does not oppose GM crops. In fact, along with Monsanto and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, it is developing GM corn varieties resistant to drought for use in Africa – Project WEMA (Water-Efficient Maize for Africa).
